How to backup and restore Internet Explorer Favorites / Bookmarks ?

As of me writing this article, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer remains the most popular browser for PC. Primary reason being that it ships with all Windows PCs being sold (except for Windows PCs sold in Europe).  Internet Explorer, with every new version is slowly and steadily getting closer to match the performance and features of it’s closest competitors – Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. I believe within 2 to 3 years , it should easily match Firefox and Chrome in terms of performance, security and features.

If you are one of the majority of people who use Internet Explorer, and would like to know how do you backup favorites from Internet Explorer just in case if for any reason you have to reinstall/upgrade your PC to clean state and would like to restore all of your favorite websites which you would have bookmarked in the past.

So, let’s read on to know how to backup Favorites/Bookmarks in Internet Explorer :

I will break this guide into two sections, one for backup and the other for restore.

How to backup Internet Explorer Favorites / Bookmarks ?

In this guide, we are not only going to backup favorites / bookmarks, but also we will back up our news feeds. If you don’t use news feed, leave the feeds tickbox unchecked when you are asked what to backup.

Step 1: Click on Star or Favorites icon towards the top left corner of the page, then click the small arrow pointing down and then click on Import and Export :

 Step 2 :  Click Export to a File and then Next :

Step 3 :  Tick Favorites, you can optionally tick Feeds if you also want to export/backup your news Feeds – or just leave Favorites ticked and the rest unticked and click Next :

Step 4 : Click and highlight Favorites and click Next :

Step 5 : Click Browse and choose where you want to save your bookmark/favorites backup file, preferably choose a back up drive/ cloud drive/ USB thumb drive or any other location where the file can be stored safely for future retrieval and Click Next or Export :

Step 6 (Optional):  Only if you chose to export/backup feeds in Step 3, then you will get this screen – Click Browse and choose where you want to save your bookmark/favorites backup file, preferably choose a back up drive/ cloud drive/ USB thumb drive or any other location where the file can be stored safely for future retrieval and Click Export :

6) Choose a backup location for news feeds if you chose to backup news feeds in step 3, otherwise you won't get this screen
